Vaccine Research Team

Principal Investigator

Dr. Lindsey R. Baden is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Principal Investigator of the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. He is the Director of the Immunocompromised Host Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Co-Investigator

Dr. Stephen R. Walsh is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Co-Investigator at the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. His current area of laboratory research focuses on elucidating the role of skin-homing poxvirus-specific T cells in immune responses elicited by MVA and Dryvax.

Co-Investigator

Dr. Amy C. Sherman is an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Co-Investigator with the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. She is an Associate Physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a member of the Precision Vaccines Program laboratory at Boston Children’s Hospital. 

Co-Investigator

Dr. Jennifer A. Johnson is an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Co-Investigator with the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. She is an active clinician-educator in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was voted “Best Teacher” in the Division.

Jane Kleinjan is a nurse practitioner with the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. She has been a research nurse with the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for more than 12 years.

Jon Gothing is a nurse practitioner with the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. He has been a research nurse with the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for more than 12 years and has worked with the AIDS Clinical Trial Group.

Kim Gaffney is a nurse with the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. She has been a research nurse with the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for more than 12 years.

Alexis D. Liakos is a physician assistant who serves as an infectious diseases consultant and a Co-Investigator with the NIAID-funded Harvard HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit. She has been a clinician and educator with the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for more than 7 years and specializes in infectious in immunocompromised patients.

Our Partners

The Red Ribbon Registry is a database that connects a community of volunteers interested in helping end HIV with local clinical studies and research teams near to them. It involves completing a short survey where you provide health and contact information.

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is the world’s largest publicly funded international collaboration facilitating the evaluation of vaccines to prevent HIV/AIDS. The HVTN helps advance the fields of vaccinology, social and behavioral sciences, statistics, and immunology, as well as tuberculosis and COVID-19 vaccines. 

Fenway Health is a national organization and model that delivers healthcare, education, and supportive services to broad communities including populations that have been historically underserved (BIPOC, LGBTQIA+).  The research division, The Fenway Institute (TFI) is an interdisciplinary center that focuses on education, research, training, and advocacy.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Their mission is to gain knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and apply that knowledge to improving quality of life for individuals. Many of our research studies are funded through the NIH.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) is an organization that is passionate about discovering scientific breakthroughs in the fields of cancer and infectious disease. They are a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS and focus research on prevention, treatment, as well as potential cures.

The Center for Virology and Vaccine Research (CVVR) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) focuses on research and education in disciplines related to virology and vaccines. We work closely in particular with the Seaman Laboratory which provides information on neutralizing antibody responses to HIV and other viruses.

The Coronavirus Prevention Network (CoVPN) was formed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the US National Institutes of Health to respond to the global pandemic. The CoVPN is dedicated to advancing COVID-19 vaccine research to find safe and effective vaccines. If interested, you can sign up to participate in a future study.
